Why Rugs Matter
At Our Boat House, we believe a rug does more than complete a room—it helps define how a space feels.
Whether you're adding warmth to a bedroom, anchoring a living room, or creating a welcoming first impression in an entryway, the right rug brings together furnishings, lighting, and décor while adding comfort, texture, and coastal character to your home.
Finding the Perfect Rug
Rug Placement Guid
The right rug can define a room, add warmth, and bring together furnishings, lighting, and décor. Consider how the room is used, the amount of foot traffic, and the style you want to create.
RUG PLACEMENT FOR LIVING ROOMS:
- The front legs of your sofa and chairs should fit on top of the rug.
- When in doubt, go big. Choosing a too-small rug can make your space feel smaller than it is.
- For gracious spaces, aim for a generously sized fit so all furniture sits completely within its borders.
- Always allow for at least 1 foot between the rug and walls to avoid it looking like wall-to-wall carpeting.
RUG PLACEMENT FOR BEDROOMS:
- Your rug should fit comfortably under all your bedroom furniture, including side tables.
- Leave at least 18"-24" of floor exposed around the edges.
- For a budget-friendly option, use one rug to fill in the open area next to an off-centered bed. Or, place two equally sized smaller rugs on either side of a centered bed.
- With twin beds, choose a large rug that fits comfortably underneath both or a smaller one that covers the lower two-thirds of the beds.
RUG PLACEMENT FOR DINING ROOMS:
- The rug should be centered under the table but still large enough that chairs fit comfortably on it even when pulled out.
- Leave at least 18"-24" between chair backs and the rug’s edge.
- Opt for the rug size that accommodates the largest length or diameter of the table.

Need Help Choosing the Perfect Rug?
Whether you're selecting a natural jute rug for a living room, a runner for an entryway, or an indoor-outdoor rug for a coastal retreat, our team can help you find the right size, material, and style for your space.
What size rug should I choose for my living room?
For most living rooms, the front legs of your sofa and chairs should rest on the rug. Larger rooms often benefit from rugs that allow all furniture to sit comfortably within the rug's borders.
Are jute rugs good for coastal homes?
Yes. Jute rugs are one of the most popular choices for coastal interiors because they add natural texture, warmth, and relaxed style. They pair beautifully with slipcovered furniture, blue and white accents, and layered coastal décor.
What is the best rug material for high-traffic areas?
Performance rugs, wool rugs, and indoor/outdoor rugs are excellent choices for busy households. They offer durability, easy maintenance, and lasting style for entryways, family rooms, and gathering spaces.
Can indoor/outdoor rugs be used inside the home?
Absolutely. Many indoor/outdoor rugs are designed to be both durable and comfortable underfoot, making them a great option for kitchens, sunrooms, mudrooms, and homes with pets or children.
How much larger should a rug be than my dining table?
A dining room rug should typically extend at least 18 to 24 inches beyond all sides of the table so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.
What rug works best for entryways and stairs?
Runners are a popular choice for hallways, entryways, and staircases. They add warmth, protect flooring, and help visually connect rooms throughout the home.
Do rugs help make a room feel larger?
Yes. Choosing the proper rug size can make a room feel more open and balanced. Rugs that are too small often make spaces feel disconnected, while appropriately scaled rugs help anchor furnishings and define the room.
How do I care for a coastal rug?
Regular vacuuming, rotating the rug periodically, and promptly addressing spills will help extend the life of your rug. Care recommendations may vary depending on material, construction, and placement.
