FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does ship authentic salvage mean exactly?

When a ship's work is done, the interior pieces are stripped at a ship breaking yard. These are typically found near ports in places like Indonesia, Bangladesh, Java & Turkey.  The special pieces that once adorned the ship's walls, passageways, interiors as well as the bridge or command center of the ship  - are sold to collectors like us. The uniqueness of this is they are rich in style, history and longevity as they withstood sea-worthy elements. From ship's wheels to passageway lights, we have salvage from all over the world. In fact, the ship salvage pieces are what inspired the idea for this company -Our Boat House.

If I purchase ship salvage, do I get a history of the ship and what type of salvage is for sale?

The ship breakage yards do not typically carry a history of the ship among all the pieces, however some of the cast brass lights are embossed with the original manufacturer/place of origin as well as some of the lanterns are banded and stamped. The life preservers at times have port or ship names on them. Some of the ship's doors, wheels and china are labeled.  We carry sea glass balls, portholes, oars, life rings, lanterns, passage lights, dock lights, buoys and more.

I have a family member who collected ship salvage. Does Our Boat House buy ship salvage?

Typically, we use our sources or items from buying trips, but if you feel it's a very special piece or collection, feel free to send images and details to info@ourboathouse.com.

I love ship lights, but do they actually illuminate and take regular light bulbs?

Most of our ship lights have been stripped from the ship and they can be UL listed wired for an additional fee. You can also purchase 'as is' and wire locally with a certified electrician of your choice. UL listed is very important as you want the product to have been tested and determined that the product meets specific, defined requirements. These requirements are often based on UL's published and nationally recognized Standards for Safety. For bulbs,  typically, they take an A shape bulb and when it has a glass globe, we suggest LED lights so they stay moderately cool, offer more light and last much longer. 25w-40w max.

What if I need to order lights for a commercial property and it's a large quantity?

We try our best to stay stocked on the ship authentic lights. We can request larger quantities if they are not on hand, so that we can assist with larger projects.
